Broner: It’s pointless for Mayweather to fight Pacquiao now

floyd9By Chris Williams: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner, the good friend of unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s), thinks whatever interest there was in a fight between Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, it died with Pacquiao’s 6th round knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8th of this month. Broner now sees it as a pointless fight because Pacquiao’s loss has killed the interest in that fight.

Broner said to Fighthype.com “Plankuiao [Pacquiao] never got out of the way of a right hand. He always gets hit with a right hand. It makes no sense for Floyd to fight him now.”

Broner is right. Getting knocked out the way that Pacquiao was does make it a senseless fight to put together. Even if Pacquiao were winning to take the small money in an 80-20 purse split, it’s still not an interesting fight because Pacquiao is starting to look like a shot fighter and has lost his last two fights. He got beat by Tim Bradley and looked bad in that fight, and then we just saw what Marquez did to him.

The knockout wasn’t a lucky punch because Marquez proved earlier in the fight that he could put Pacquiao down when he tagged him with a hard right hand in the 3rd round. There was nothing lucky about that shot.

It was a beautiful right hand that Pacquiao couldn’t block because he didn’t think Marquez was going to hit him with such a wide punch

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum doesn’t sound interested at all in trying to put together a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather now, if he ever really was interested. Arum seems resigned to the fact that the fight won’t be happening. He probably realizes that if the fight were to be made now, Pacquiao would have to take such a smaller percentage of the purse that it wouldn’t be worth it for him to take the fight, but you can’t ask Mayweather to give the guy parity in negotiations with him losing his last two fights and on the verge of losing another fight when he faces Marquez next year for a fifth time.
