trout8By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0, 30 KO’s) has already been confirmed for the May 4th undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. We’re still waiting to find out who the 22-year-old Canelo will be fighting on that date. WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) is hoping that Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy will select him to face Canelo on this date. However, Trout says nothing is official yet whether he’ll get the fight, according to RingTV.

Canelo told RingTV that there can’t be any talks with Golden Boy about a fight with Alvarez until he finds out whether Miguel Cotto will choose to fight him again to try and avenge his loss to Trout from December 1st of this month. Cotto had a rematch clause in the contract for that fight and it runs out on January 14th or 15th. If Cotto doesn’t choose to use it, then Trout will be available to fight Alvarez.

Alvarez wanted to fight Cotto, but with his loss to Trout it’s no longer the ideal fight for Alvarez. Dan Rafael said that Alvarez wants to fight Trout, but it’s up to Golden Boy whether they let that happen. They want to make a star out of the young fighter and facing Trout might get in the way of that. Trout has a real chance of beating Alvarez, because of his speed, size, arm length, southpaw style and boxing ability. Alvarez has been carefully groomed by Golden Boy by being put in with guys that come straight to him.

The only fighter that they’ve put Alvarez in with that showed any kind of movement was 41-year-old Shane Mosley, and Alvarez looked flustered in the later rounds due to the little bit of movement that Mosley was using against him.

Trout sees Alvarez’s fighting style as being perfect for him to dominate the shorter fighter. Alvarez fights in aggressive manner, always coming forward moving in straight lines. He doesn’t have much mobility, doesn’t throw many jabs, and has a classic Mexican fighting style with a lot of body punching and hooks. Trout believes he can beat Alvarez, although he sees him as a tougher opponent than Cotto due to his bigger frame.
