Alexander-Brook pushed back to March 2nd

By Scott Gilfoid: Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) suffered an ankle injury in training recently, and he’s not going to be able to make the original January 19th date in his title challenge against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s). The Brook-Alexander fight will now be pushed back to March 2nd at the Nokia Theater, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Brook is going to probably need that extra time so that he can come up with some kind of a game plan that will help him against Alexander, because the way I see it Brook doesn’t stand a chance against him. This isn’t Michael Jennings or Lovemore N’dou that Brook is fighting. Brook is finally fighting a quality in the top tier after all these years, and I think he’s going to be ready. Brook will find himself totally unprepared for Alexander’s speed, power and athleticism.

Alexander has looked sensational lately in beating Randall Bailey to take the International Boxing Federation title last October with a 12 round decision. I liked the way that Alexander was able to keep moving to negate Bailey’s big power. Before that, Alexander had done a job on a really big hitter in Marcos Maidana in shutting him out completely in a one-sided 10 round decision win last February.

I rate Maidana as a better fighter than Brook, so it was interesting to see how well Alexander handled this big puncher without taking too many hits. Alexander also beat Lucas Matthysse, who I really consider a fighter with a lot of talent. Alexander was able to pile up an early lead against Mattyysse and then hold onto it as Mattysse attempted to rally in the second half of the fight.

Brook has been busy beating these guys lately: Matthew Hatton, Hector David Saldivia, Carson Jones, and Luis Galarza. Brook took a lot of punishment in winning a controversial decision over Jones at home, and you can make an argument that he would have been knocked out had the referee not stepped in to stop the action when Brook on the verge of being knocked out in the 12th and giving Jones a warning for something that I still can’t figure out.
