By Steven Ocallaghan: I might not be the best person to pass comment on American heavyweight Deontay Wilder (25-0, 25 KO’s) as have only seen a handful of his fights but I do know enough about boxing to comment on a fighters skills and punching ability.
Wilder at 6’7″ is the typical size now of the super heavyweight division. Hes lean and quick with decent punching power, after all 25 KOs in 25 fights does elude to that. That is where the compliments have to stop. While am no huge fan of Tyson Fury, he has faced decent opposition and takes on another former world title challenger in Kevin Johnson. Fury has also faced and defeated tough Londoner Derrick Chisora who gave a good account of himself against Vitali Klitchko.
Wilder at 27 is still facing guys ranked well below him. Is Golden Boy Promotions trying to tell us something. Maybe GBP know that if Wilder does step up and face a credible opponent he will get found out. Sconiers had him on the deck and the rumour in sparring is that Audley Harrison also floored him. I can’t see how fighting guys ranked way below you is meant to bring you on.
David Price at 29 needs to start making a move now. Mat Skelton at 45 is not the right way forward, even though Skelton is on a 5 fight win streak. But at least Skelton has been in with good opponents.
I like Price. A good boxer, nothing flashy but does the job correctly. Very heavy handed as 12 of his 14 opponents have found out. Remember only 14 fights and he is top 15, where as Wilder having had 25 fights is still regarded by the top guys as a half decent sparring partner, and before all the haters say I’m talking rubbish, the facts don’t lie. He has been David Haye’s sparring partner, Wladimir Klitchkos sparring partner and even Audley Harrison’s sparring partner and has never fought a guy ranked above him except or maybe his first couple of fights.
Kelvin Price at 37 is a late starter to boxing after being involved in basketball for most of his life. He had his first fight at 32 and compiled a record of 13 wins out of 13. He has a decent 6 round S/D win over Tor Hamer but Hamer for me will never really be mentioned with the top guys. Yes he has a win over Kevin Johnson but anybody who knows Johnson knows he’s not a 3 round fighter.
Kelvin Prices main attributes are his size and long arms but that’s it. Another nothing fight or Wilder and at 27 with 25 wins is now just making the undercard of fighters who have lost their last 2 world title fights.
Maybe Golden Boy are holding him back for a reason. Maybe Wilder is just not good enough, and remember, the facts don’t lie.
