Waiting for Floyd

Image: Waiting for FloydIt would seem to many an observer that boxing has descended into a further period of waiting, as is so often the case when it comes to the elite level match making that adorns the sport. Where else to begin this article than with the current P4P king, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Since his return to boxing in 2009 the boxing world has hung on his every whim. Obviously there was the fight that never was or will be and the hugely entertaining fight with Cotto. But since then very little has been heard from boxing’s one genuine superstar.

This leaves the game in a very precarious position. A position whereby many of boxings elite level fighters are in limbo as to the possibility of facing the man who will provide them with the biggest pay day of there career, and almost certainly cement there place within higher echelons of the sport.

As a result of this period of media abstinence from Mayweather, shock-waves are felt through many of boxings marquee divisions and the effects can easily be seen. It would seem that Timothy Bradley may now be holding out for a shot at Mayweather after he was unable to secure the rematch with Pacquiao.

To many this would seem like the only logical step for Bradley to pursue after his last victory, but the prospect of this fight going ahead would seem very slim, especially considering the hatred between Mayweather and Bob Arum, Bradleys promoter. Due to Bradleys insistence upon only wanting the elite, it would seem that lack of word from Mayweather will keep the 147 king inactive for the foreseeable future.

This is also true of the up and coming Canelo Alvarez, many observers expect a match-up with Money in his next fight to be a logical choice, but as no word has yet arrived from Mayweather, no match can be made. Finally there is also the Pacquiao situation.

If Manny can somehow roll back the years and dazzle with a vintage performance over Marquez, he would also launch himself into a possible shot at Floyd, giving the world the fight it wants to see. While the boxing world is yet to see any signs of activity from the Mayweather camp, one thing remains certain, boxing needs Floyd Mayweather Jr, both fans and fighters alike.
