Image: Wach: This was the hardest fight I've ever hadBy Dan Ambrose: Mariusz Wach (27-1, 15 KO’s) has nothing to show for his fight last night against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (59-3, 50 KO’s) other than a face full of bruises and a nice payday in his 12 round decision loss. It was one big thumping from start to finish as the 32-year-old Wach didn’t have the tools needed to win the fight.

Wach spent most of the fight being on the receiving end of Wladimir’s pile driving jabs and solid right hands. The fight hands would have knocked out an average fighter but against the steel-chinned Wach, they had little affect.

The final judges scores – 120-107, 120-107 and 119-109 – told the story of how one-sided this fight was. Wach looked overwhelmed to begin with, but it got worse for him as the fight wore on believe it or not.

After the fight, Wladimir said this at the post-fight press conference: “The punches [I hit Wach with] were really hard. I could feel it on my hands.”

Wach said to AP “That was the hardest fight of my career.”

That makes a lot of sense because Wach had never lost before last night, and had spent the majority of his career facing C level heavyweights that were no preparation at all for what he had to experience last night. Maybe if Wach had fought quality heavyweights in the past he wouldn’t have been so badly routed by Wladimir. But then again maybe it wouldn’t have really mattered because Wach had little in the way of physical tools to work with. He did the best he could given his limited hand speed and slow footwork.

Wach hit Wladimir hard in the 5th round with a big overhand right after backing him up against the ropes. You could see Wach lining Wladimir up for that shot and it was surprising Wladmir put himself in that position to begin with. However, Wach did a poor job of trying to connect with his other big shots to follow up. There was a chance there, as small as it was, for Wach to possibly a score a knockout but he was so slow and wild as he flailed at the air as if he couldn’t see what he was aiming at.
