Trout training at 7000 feet for Cotto fight

By Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) is taking a scientific approach to getting ready for his December 1st fight against challenger Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) by training at high altitude at 7000 in the New Mexico mountains to get fully prepared to fight the 5’7″ Cotto at the Madison Square Garden next month.

Trout told Fighthype.com “It’s been a great camp thus far…All my sparring partners, everyone’s been helping out. I feel like I’m fight on schedule if not ahead of it.”

The thing with Trout is he’s never been beaten before. In fact, he’s never faced anyone that’s been remotely competitive with him thus far because he’s been easily beating everyone that’s been put in front of him. To be sure, the 27-year-old Trout hasn’t faced anyone as good as the 32-year-old Cotto during his seven year pro career. However, Trout has beaten some very good fighters in Delvin Rodriguez, Rigoberto Alvarez and David Lopez and looked quite good in doing so. It doesn’t matter that Trout hasn’t beaten anyone as good as Cotto. What matters is that Trout has beaten very good competition in one-sided fashion.

This is a breakthrough fight for Trout. If he can beat Cotto by a lopsided decision or better yet if he can stop Cotto inside the distance, Trout will be making a name for himself overnight and will put himself on course to become one of the big names in the sport. He’ll still need help from guys like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Sergio Martinez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. But if Trout can get a fight against at least one of those fighters and beat them, he’ll be among the top fighters in the sport.

It’s not easy getting to the level where boxing fans will pay to see a new fighter, but Trout is within distance of making that happen if he can beat Cotto and one more name.
