Trout, 27, isn’t making a big deal out of the sparring session like some boxers would in a similar situation. Trout knows that Margarito and Cotto are two completely different fighters, so it’s not as if he’s going to get a lot from the bit of sparring. However, what Trout can get from Margarito is valuable tips in how to defeat Cotto, because Margarito had Cotto taking knees left and right in their first fight in July 2008.

Margarito stopped Cotto in that fight and gave him a tremendous beating in the process. Cotto did avenge the defeat last year against a Margarito that was coming off of a year-long layoff and three separate eye surgeries. Even with that, Margarito was coming in that fight and looked to be on his way to repeating another late fight knockout like he had done in the first fight.

Cotto is going to have to deal with Trout’s speed, boxing ability, southpaw stance, height and long reach. It’s going to be tough for Cotto because Trout has so many advantages that he’s not used to. Cotto is used to beating up lesser come forward type fighters and Trout isn’t in that mold. He’s a boxer with great size for the weight class, and he’s going to give Cotto a lot of trouble in this fight.

Cotto’s fans think he’s going to be able to land his shots against Trout due to Cotto’s good performance against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his last fight in May. However, Mayweather looked like he felt sorry for Cotto because he didn’t even try to box him. Mayweather instead focused on beating Cotto at his own game by choosing to slug it out with him.
