The Broner Dilemma

Image: The Broner DilemmaBy Rusty Nate: I recently read an article regarding Adrien Broner and what is next for him after capturing the World Title from Demarco and also securing the number 1 spot in the Ring Lightweight Ranking.

A lot has been speculated.

He shouldn’t fight Burns because it would be an easy win so what’s the point.

He should step straight up and fight the champions at Light Welter.

He should fight Pacquiao because it would be a good substitute for a Mayweather fight.

He should fight Hatton if he wins on Saturday because fighting Malignaggi again is pointless.

He should match a super fight with Mayweather whom Broner has clearly based his style on.

My thoughts on these points are as follows.

Burns – I don’t think this would be a great fight to be honest. I love Ricky Burns as a fighter, he has no BS surrounding him and just gets on with the job, but I would see Broner treating him as he did Demarco and winning with relative ease.

Marquez – Well Marquez first off is a fight that 100% depends on the December result so there is not point discussing.

Peterson – This would be miss match plain and simple. He is too work horse like, he walks straight forward and doesn’t have the power to throw Broner off his game. Another simple victory for Broner.

Garcia – This fight I would like to see. Garcia said before the Khan fight that timing beats speed and he is 100% right, he proved it first hand that his timing is amazing (the Morales KO punch can show you that). Would he be able to use this to effect against Broner’s defense? Well I believe at this point in Broners career then yes there is a chance, he is not quite the finished article Broner and he took some basic shots from Demarco at the weekend that had no real power behind them. If Garcia waits for a few more fights he could find that Broner’s defense has suddenly becomes twice as hard to get past.

Pacquiao – I can’t see Pac taking this fight if offered and quite frankly I don’t think Broner should go looking for it. Regardless of Manny’s recent lack luster performances he is still a 10 time, 8 Division world champion with experience vastly out weighing Broner. If they fought now and Broner was KO’d or worse, out scored by Manny then the gravy train would be over before it started. Although it would give Manny some claim to “this is what would happen to Mayweather” and the boxing fans would have a real argument to go on! :)

Hatton – Possibly Broner’s best option depending on the result on Saturday. Hatton is a fighter who is known all over the world, he is generally liked all over the world which would create a big payday for Broner and what’s the key here is that he is beatable. There have been blueprints set out by Manny and Floyd on the different ways this can be accomplished. At this stage of Ricky’s career he is in a position to challenge Broner more so than he has been but at the same time Broner has the potential to make the fight very easy for himself and in turn improve his reputation a fair bit. That doesn’t mean to say that he will make the fight easy! I for one would of course be behind Ricky all the way, but my head tells me a Broner late stoppage or UD.

Mayweather – The worst option of all! Apart from the fact that the fight would be looked at as a novelty because of the huge similarities between the two and of course Broner being labelled as “The Next Mayweather”, this would undoubtedly be the most boring fight in a long time. Two identical defensive masterclass fighters (counter punchers) who are notoriously difficult to hit (especially cleanly) battling out over a 12 round decision that will probably be with in a few round of each other because there was not enough action to split them fully. Which ever way the decision went it would do nothing for either fighter if they would win.

Broner has a lot of options ahead of him. I just hope that he doesn’t decide to start dodging the best champions of each division as he moves through. He has made the right start by defeating Demarco, he must now head towards Garcia –– Marquez – Hatton – Bradley – Alexander/Brook – Ortiz/Berto and so on! I didn’t include Khan in the list because he needs to re-prove he deserves a shot in my eyes starting in December.
