Tarver turns 44 today
By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA/WBC light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver turns 44 today. Tarver last fought in June of this year in looking good in battling undefeated cruiserweight Lateef Kayode to a 12 round draw.
Hopefully in 2013, Tarver can look to get a title shot against one of the champions at light heavyweight or better yet cruiserweight. He’s still good enough to compete with the best fighters as he showed against Kayode and Danny Green.
At 44, Tarver needs to be a little more active. He’s got great genetics and can probably fight at a high level for another four years if he wants to, but he’s got to stay in shape and fight more often. Before his fight with Kayode last June, Tarver hadn’t fought since beating Green by a 9th round stoppage in July of 2011 in a fight that took place at cruiserweight.
It might be too hard for Tarver to get back down to 175 to take on the young lions like Nathan Cleverly, Tavoris Cloud and Beibut Shumenov, but that would be something he might want to think about when he gets back in the ring next year.
