Image: Senchenko thinks he'll get Khan fight if he beats Hatton on SaturdayBy William Mackay: Former WBA World welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-1, 21 KO’s) is under the impression that he can get a fight against former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan if Senchenko wins his fight this Saturday night against Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s) at the Manchester Arena.

Senchenko said “I could fight Amir Khan if I win.”

I looks like Golden Boy Promotions must have spoke to Senchenko about making the fight with Khan. That’s probably a much bigger money fight for Senchenko than it would be for him to fight a rematch against Paulie Malignaggi, who stopped him in 9 rounds earlier this year last April.

That’s the fight that Hatton wants if he gets past Senchenko. However, it’s not likely going to be offered to Senchenko if he beats Hatton because it would be a hard sell to the boxing public trying to interest them in seeing Malignaggi and Senchenko go at it once again. Malignaggi beat Senchenko pretty decisively, as it wasn’t ever close in the fight.

Senchenko is going to have his hands full with Hatton though and he should be focusing on what he’s going to do to try and win this fight then thinking of a possible fight with Khan.

It would be kind of sad to see Khan jump up a division after beating lightweight Carlos Molina on December 15th, because that would be like rewarding a fighter based on failure rather than success. Khan has lost his last two fights at light welterweight against Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, and beating a soft opponent like Molina, who was selected very carefully by Golden Boy, wouldn’t do much as far as redeeming Khan’s reputation among the boxing community.

Presumably we would then see Khan beat Senchenko and then face Malignaggi for his World Boxing Association title. Khan already beat Malignaggi once, so it wouldn’t be that hard for him to do it a second time. Having Khan as the WBA welterweight champion would be like exchanging one paper champion for another. Khan would likely do well until he faces his first puncher as the champion and he’d then have some problems.
