Image: Schaefer: Danny Garcia, Broner & Khan a possibility for Malignaggi's next fightBy William Mackay: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is interested in possibly having WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner and/or WBC/WBA light welterweight champion Danny Garcia step up in weight to face Golden Boy fighter WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi in what would be a Golden Boy in house fight.

Schaefer missed out on the big money opponent Ricky Hatton who he was hoping to match against Malignaggi. Hatton was stopped by Vyacheslav Senchenko in the 9th round last Saturday night. That loss removed any possibility of a Hatton-Malignaggi fight, especially after Hatton then retired.

Schaefer can’t match Senchenko against Malignaggi because Senchenko was already stopped by Malignaggi in the 9th round last April, so a rematch between them is out of the question.

Schaefer said to RingTV “Maybe Danny Garcia?…Maybe Adrien Broner…Paulie wants a big fight.”

Besides Broner and Garcia as potential opponents for Malignaggi, Schaefer is also kicking around the idea of having Amir Khan move up in weight to take the fight against Malignaggi. However, I don’t know if Malignaggi would consider that a big fight at this point given Khan’s recent losses to Garcia and Lamont Peterson.

Malignaggi was already stopped by Khan in the 11th round of a one-sided fight in 2010, and I can’t imagine Malignaggi wanting to fight Khan again especially with Khan’s career sagging the way it is. Malignaggi would be doing Khan a tremendous favor in fighting him, and I don’t think the American public would see that as a big fight.

Schaefer would have to take that fight to the UK to get fans interested in it. A Garcia vs. Malignaggi or Broner vs. Malignaggi would be much bigger fights than having Khan brought in. Schaefer really needs to work on trying to rebuild Khan’s career the fight way, not by putting him in against a weak punching paper champion like Malignaggi.

Khan is facing lightweight Carlos Molina on December 15th next month, and that fight won’t do a thing for getting boxing fans to forget about Khan’s knockout loss to Danny Garcia last July and neither would putting Khan in with Malignaggi. Besides, even Khan defeated Malignaggi, Khan would be in deep trouble once he had to defend his belt against a welterweight with power. Khan doesn’t belong at welterweight, and Schaefer shouldn’t waste his time.
