Robert Guerrero’s ambition may not be enough against Andre Berto

Image: Robert Guerrero's ambition may not be enough against Andre BertoBy Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Robert Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO’s) may be the most ambitious fighter in all of boxing and you’ve got to commend him for being able to move up two divisions to win the interim WBC welterweight strap last July against Selcuy Aydin. However, after a fighter gets to a certain level it takes more than just ambition to win.

You’ve got to have power, size, speed and talent. Guerrero seems to be missing the needed ingredients to win his next fight against Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KO’s) in two of those areas – power, size and speed.

Berto is simply too big, too fast and too powerful for the tall string bean-like Guerrero to win in their fight on November 24th at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in California. It’s too bad because Guerrero’s got that motivating story that kind of interests boxing fans. But it doesn’t really matter. In this sport the only that matters is what you do in the ring.

You can have a great life story, and you can have a great personality but if you can get the job done in the ring you get filtered out. That’s just the way it is. Guerrero really belongs at lightweight or maybe light welterweight, and he’s going to find out quick on November 24th that he’s inside the ring with the wrong person. It’s good that Guerrero bulked up in weight, but the power didn’t carry with him and he simply doesn’t belong. Berto is going to be giving Guerrero the boot from the division by battering him and knocking him out in this fight.

It’s too bad because Guerrero was a good fighter at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight. I enjoyed watching him beat the likes of Michael Katsidis, Jason Litzau, Vicente Escobedo, Malcolm Klassen, and Joel Casamayor. Of course, Guerrero wasn’t perfect at the lighter weights. We saw him struggle and get beaten by Orlando Salido and Gamaliel Diaz. We saw Guerrero floundering against Daud Cino Yordan. But for the most Guerrero was a pretty goood fighter from featherweight to lightweight.

Unfortunately, Guerrero is at 147 and he’s pretty average at this weight and is going to take losses starting with Berto. Guerrero doesn’t have the tools to beat Berto and it’s going to be like sending someone to war with only cap gun. Guerrero is going to be out of his league and if he doesn’t get stopped he’ll end up taking a beating from Berto.
