Image: Roach: Me and Buboy have been working on Pacquiao's aggressivenessBy Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach and Buboy Fernandez, one of Manny Pacquiao’s helpers, has been assisting Roach at trying to extract some aggression from Pacquiao to change enough to where he’ll dominate 39-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8th and beat for the first time convincingly without boxing fans crying foul.

Roach said to the Manila Bulletin “We are going to be the aggressor and me and Buboy have been working with Manny being more aggressive. We’re going to have more momentum and he [Pacquiao] is really doing well with it.” Roach sounds like a broken record with this whole ‘bring more aggressiveness’ theme for Pacquiao.

One question. Why didn’t Roach work on Pacquiao being more aggressive for the three previous fights with Marquez? What were they doing in the training sessions? Wasn’t Roach predicting knockout wins for all of those fights? What’s different about this fight, other than Pacquiao now being older at 34 and clearly slower than he was in his youth.

This whole talk of Pacquiao being aggressive reminds me of my old football coach in describing the kind of defense were going to have for our games. He was always talking about how were going to have attacking defense, and yet weren’t good at all except for me. We went 0-11 for the season we were with the coach before he got canned.

Roach reminds me of my old coach with his talk of how Pacquiao is going to look. Let’s be honest here. If Pacquiao hasn’t looked like Roach is describing him in the past three fights how is anything going to be any different now that he’s 34 and has clearly lost few steps due to the aging process.

Does Roach expect boxing fans to believe that Pacquiao will be a more aggressive fighter because Buboy is helping out in trying to get Pacquiao more aggressive? Come on, Roach can do better than that.

I think Pacquiao should think about canning Roach and sweeping clean his entire training staff. He needs to go in there with a big broom and shoo them all out of there en masse and then go to Las Vegas and see if he can get help by Floyd Mayweather Sr. He might be able to help teach Pacquiao how to fight well enough to finally beat Marquez without people screaming bloody murder about controversial decisions.
