Ricky Hatton: A fan’s words

Image: Ricky Hatton: A fan's wordsI have just watched a documentary called ‘Ricky Hatton: The Comeback’. Emotionally, I am conflicted and drained.

Like most boxing fans I was thrilled and concerned by the announcement of Ricky Hatton’s comeback. Thrilled for selfish reasons, certainly.

Concerned… that an idol of so many is willing to risk so much to please those who need no appeasement, who ask no more of you. So, what are you fighting for, not for money and certainly not penitence.

Defeat teaches us more than success, but few men have the strength to accept the lesson taught.

Need. You say you ‘Need’ to make your family, friends, fans and Sport proud. And yet you already you have. So do you ‘Need’ to do this for yourself, I wonder? I see desire, but also, desperation, and to win this fight, you may have to lose this boxing match.

You are fighting much more than just Vyacheslav Senchenko on Saturday night. But, rest assured, your family, your friends, your fans and your sport are with you every step of the way.

I hope the punches you land give you belief, hope, happiness and peace.

You fight to win and we fight with you. You make us proud Ricky Hatton.

Better to have boxed and lost, than to have never boxed at all.
