By Sebastian Hernandez: In the sport boxing few men are remembered. Those few are not only immortalized by their outstanding records or unbeaten streaks but by their skill, perseverance, pride, and courage in the ring. One such boxer who possessed these qualities in excess was one of the best boxers Puerto Rico has ever blessed us with. I speak of none other than Hector Macho Camacho.

Camacho since his youth shined brightly in the amateur ranks by winning three New York Golden Glove championships. After wrapping a brilliant amateur career he began his journey to stardom as a professional in 1980. After 12 short fights he won the NABF title at super feather weight. He then went on to fight for the WBC super featherweight title and against Raphael Limón winning in a spectacular 5th round knockout.

His career flourished afterword where he had spectacular victories. He went on to win the WBC lightweight title, the WBO junior welterweight title, and IBC Welterweight titles. He fought and beat several renowned boxers including Roberto Duran (twice), Sugar Ray Leonard, Greg Haugen, Edwin Rosario, Ray Mancini, and Raphael Limon. He also fought great fighters such as Felix “Tito” Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez, and at the time Yori Campas. Camacho reigned over boxing not only as a boxing great, but also as an extravagant fighter with panache and style.

He lit up the circuit, caused commotion and drew more people into boxing. He, a strong nationalist always fought for his people and his fans. I will only focus on his boxing career as this is a boxing website not a tabloid. May you rest in peace Camacho, and thank you for all those exciting moments you gave the boxing world.
