Quintana said this as quoted by RingTV “I told Oscar De La Hoya that…I want to fight Canelo on May 4. He’s a strong young champion, the best in the division, and the Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry has always given boxing fans great fights.”

That might be the kind of fight match-up that the 22-year-old Alavarez has in mind for that fight date, as he previously directed for Golden Boy Promotions to get him one of the following fighters for the May 4th date: Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Sergio Martinez. What Alvarez is looking for are established stars in boxing so that he can become a bigger name himself by beating one of them, if he could get a fight with one of them in the first place.

Quintana isn’t anywhere close to being as popular as Cotto, Mayweather Jr. or Martinez, and the only way he’ll get that fight with Alvarez is if none of his big three names are available to fight him due to busy schedules or just plan lack of interest. Quintana is ranked #15 by the World Boxing Council, but he’s better known than most of the top contenders ranked above him, so it’s possible that he could get the Alvarez fight if none of those guys choose to fight Alvarez.

Quintana should worry about just getting by the hard hitting Thurman because there’s a good chance that he could lose that fight. Thurman has excellent power and he’s at least on par with Andre Berto in the power department if not the speed. Berto destroyed Quintana by a 8th round TKO in April 2010.
