Image: Martin Murray could face Sergio Martinez on April 27th if he beats NavarroBy Scott Gilfoid: If unbeaten #3 WBC middleweight contender Martin Murray (24-0-1, 10 KO’s) wins his fight this Saturday night against #7 WBA Jorge Navarro (12-0, 10 KO’s) on the Ricky Hatton vs. Vyacheslav Senchenko undercard in Manchester, England, Murray could find himself fighting for a world title against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on April 27th in Argentina.

It’s still not a done deal but Murray is looking like the guy that will get the pick because HBO has to bless the fight and it’s unclear whether they’ll say yes to the other alternatives that Martinez’s promoter is looking to match him with. There is Kerry Hope, Jose Miguel Torres and Domenica Spada.

While Torres and Spada might make for a more interesting fight against Martinez, I don’t know that HBO would say yes to either of them as a potential opponent for Martinez because they’re not unbeaten like Murray, and neither is Kerry Hope. Murray already fought for a world title against former WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm last year in December but the fight was scored a 12 round draw.

Murray fought well at times in the fight, but Sturm’s power advantage and his 12th round flurry that had Murray badly hurt was enough to keep the fight a draw. I had Sturm winning that fight, and I’m no Sturm fan. I thought he did enough to win it based on his cleaner landing shots and his bigger power along with his impressive 12th round.

Murray has got to get past Navarro on Saturday and that’s going to be tough because Navarro and punch and I can see him knocking Murray out if he takes the fight to him early on.

If Murray does get by Navarro, and if HBO says yes to him fighting Martinez, then we could see a potentially one-sided fight in April. I think Murray is a good basic fighter, but I don’t see him as being in the class of the Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. type fighters and I think he’s going to look like someone that has wondered out into the ring without the talent to compete if he winds up facing Martinez.
