By Chris Williams: In analyzing what Manny Pacquiao has lost in his game through aging and the result of moving up in weight to welterweight, Juan Manuel Marquez feels that his game has eroded in a number of critical areas that make him less dangerous.

Speaking with RingTV, Marquez said this about his fight with Pacquiao last November: “Manny has become a more predictable fighter…He was not as fast or explosive as he was in our previous two fights. I feel I won 9 out of 12 rounds.”

Yes, it’s painfully clear that Pacquiao has become totally predictable now with his offense. I think a lot of that has to do with his trainer Freddie Roach. When you watch Roach giving Pacquiao directions in his training it’s like watching a replay of the same moves over and over again. I don’t see Roach telling Pacquiao new ways of attacking his opponents.

It seems like it’s all rush in, land a couple shots, and then rush out. This is pretty much how Pacquiao has been fighting for years now. Roach now wants to try and have Pacquiao throw a lot of shots to try overwhelm the 39-year-old Marquez with punches. Even with that kind of game plan, it’s just a reversal to how Pacquiao used to fight in his more primitive early stage in his career when he was just looking to flurry on his opposition.

What Pacquiao needs is to change his whole game entirely so that he’s not predictable for this fight, and I don’t see that happening. Roach is already saying Pacquiao will either hit and back away or he’ll look to land a lot of shots to beat Marquez down. That’s all old stuff. Roach should be trying to teach Pacquiao how to box, and how to use his jab so that he doesn’t tire out so badly like he did in his last fight against Tim Bradley.
