Is Andre Ward p4p #1 in boxing now?

Currently most websites that have a ranking system for boxing have either Floyd Mayweather Jr or Manny Pacquiao as their pound for pound number one. Whilst I can understand the reasoning behind these rankings I have begun to grow disillusioned with these two, as they haven’t fought the best opposition available to them, i.e each other.

Now, Andre Ward on the other hand has fought the cream of the crop in the super-middleweight division, rarely losing a round and performing dominantly in all of his most high profile fights.

I can understand the reasoning behind Mayweather or Pacquiao being P4P no1 a year or two ago but they BOTH have shown signs of slipping. If I’m honest, Pacquiao seems to have lost the most, but Mayweather has been plagued throughout his career with accusations of ducking fighters in their prime.

Can either of these things honestly be said of Ward? I mean come on even Mayweather has that controversial “win” in his first fight with Jose Luis Castillo. Ward on the other hand is unbeaten since the age of 15 and hasn’t even been close to losing a fight in the professional ranks, and has fought the divisions top fighters one after another. Each time we thought he was going to be in deep waters he has upped his game to the next level.

Ward has ducked nobody and doesn’t even seem to break a sweat in most fights, and has unified most of the major titles at 168 lbs with the exception of the IBF belt that Carl Froch holds. Thing is, Ward handled Froch with relative ease last December, even though it was considered Wards toughest fight.

I think it says a lot about Ward that he won his “toughest” fight 8 rounds to 4. Not to mention that long time P4P contender Chad Dawson was obliterated by Ward. And don’t give me all that crap that Dawson was weight drained; Chad himself showed what sort of man he is admitting that the result had nothing to do with the weight, that the better man won fair and square.

So think about it. Over the last couple of years and based on RECENT opposition, and the performances in the ring do Mayweather or Pacquiao really deserve to be P4P #1? I for one think if Andre Ward had more of an interesting personality he would be P4P#1. What do the real boxing fans think?
