Image: Is Adrien Broner the new Floyd Mayweather?? No he’s the new generation of boxing!!By Paul Walsh: The only similarities between Adrien Broner and Floyd Mayweather are they are both black American, unbeaten and charismatic and that is where the similarities end.  After watching Broner’s eight round demolition of lightweight king Antonio DeMarco I was pleased as I knew the world would finally stand up and appreciate the star that is Adrien Broner.

I have been following his career for a long time and from the first fight I saw I knew he was something special.  No longer is he just another flashy, cocky, trash talking fighter with too much confidence he actually has the skill and talent to back it up.  He is indeed a problem.

Broner himself said this fight would be reminiscent of Mayweather vs. Diego Corrales but it was nothing like it, not even close.  Broner did something I have never seen Mayweather do, he stalked his man, stood in front of him and traded for eight punishing rounds.  Broner showed a willingness to fight and a level of aggression which Floyd has never displayed. He is a fighter in every sense of the word, he wants to get in there and do damage to his opponent, again something Floyd was never interested in.  He fought in the pocket, was elusive and beat he’s man to the punch every time.  At times Broner made it look so easy but before you start saying “Broner should have won and DeMarco is rubbish”, let’s not forget DeMarco is the number one lightweight in the world but he was made to look like nothing more than a sparring partner.

Broner was too fast, too strong, too slick and too aggressive.  DeMarco had no answer to it and he admitted so in the post-fight press conference.  He experienced first-hand that Broner is on another level.  This fight has made it clear that Broner is the real deal and that he will lead the charge of boxing’s new generation with his super skills and larger than life personality.  He has everything in his artillery to be the next superstar of the sport.  Fresh, fly and flashy at all times, he is having fun with it and you can see it every time he gets in the ring.  From his ring entrance, rapping with West coast sensation Kendrick Lamar to the victory shuffle he broke out into once DeMarco’s corner threw in the towel.  He is doing things his own way and just being himself.

The next move for Broner will be intriguing, he states he has no desire to move up anytime soon but I think he will have to do this sooner rather than later to stay relevant.  The lightweight division is not blessed with elite level fighters so a unification bout with Ricky Burns seems the obvious choice but after that there isn’t much else.  Even this fight is almost a mismatch and I would not expect Burns to cause Broner too many problems.

Broner stated in the press conference that he would like a shot at the great Juan Manuel Marquez.  But at 39 years of age and at a weight he has not fought at for the last 5 years it seems unlikely.  I think an immediate move up to junior welterweight would be a no brainer as it would only enhance his superstar billing.  With the likes of Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, Lamont Peterson, Victor Ortiz, Juan Manuel Marquez, Marcos Maidana, Andre Berto fighting at that weight some super fights could be on the horizon.

Broner has the frame to go up to 154 (maximum) and with Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather on their way out he should be next in line for the throne and I think he can dominate the boxing scene for a number of years.  With a record of 25-0-0 (21 Kos) and only 23 years of age, he is definitely a problem and one I think boxing will not be able to solve.
