Image: Guerrero vs. Berto: Robert with a chance to prove that he belongs at 147By Dan Ambrose: We’ve heard the talk from WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO’s) how he wants to become one of the great ones in the sport of boxing and how he wants to create an outstanding legacy for himself. He moved up in weight from the safe confines of the lightweight division and picked up the interim strap against Selcuk Aydin last July.

Aydin was a fighter that had never really proven himself against notable opposition, so it wasn’t surprising to see Guerrero beat him last July. Guerrero now is facing a one of the proven top fighters in former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KO’s) on November 24th and this fight is going to show clearly whether the 29-year-old Guerrero belongs among the top fighters at 147 or if he’s just another contender in the division.

Being an interim title holder is meaningless and it’s not the real thing. Guerrero has to prove that he can beat the real top guys at 147, and Berto is definitely one of them. He’s not a former paper champion. He was the real thing, and this is going to be tough for Guerrero because he showed little power or speed in beating Aydin.

The power and speed just wasn’t there for Guerrero for that fight, and it looked like Guerrero left what little power he had behind him when he left the lightweight division. It’s not really surprising that Guerrero’s power didn’t carry up with him because he did after all move up two divisions in moving to welterweight.

Guerrero wants to be the best so badly that he was willing to make that ambitious move. However, just because Guerrero wants to be the best doesn’t mean his body will let him because it looks like his body is already telling him that he’s not made for 147. Berto will cement that fact if he’s able to beat Guerrero this month by a lopsided decision or a knockout.
