Image: Froch thinks Kessler is ducking rematchBy Gareth Rees: Carl Froch (29-2) believes Mikkel Kessler (45-2) is going to duck a potential rematch between the pair in 2013. Kessler defeated Froch by a controversial decision in Denmark in 2010 during the Super Six tournament, which was the first loss of the Brits’ career.

Froch has been keen to avenge that loss before he retires and has openly said he would like to face Kessler in 2013, after his rematch with Lucian Bute given that he defeats Yusaf Mack this Saturday. However Froch has expressed his concern over how much Kessler would want the rematch, he told The Sun that he had spoken to Kessler telling him wants to get the “Fight on.”

However according to Froch, Kessler didn’t seem to have the same attitude towards rematch, as Froch claimed in an interview at thesun.co.uk Kessler gave him “Short and sweet answers and then changed the subject.” Froch added “He sounded like a man who doesn’t want to fight and he certainly wasn’t saying, let’s do it in the summer.”

Froch knows that Kessler will be the one to make or break the rematch saying “A fight against me isn’t a necessity as he’s not a mandatory challenger.” He added “It will have to be money-motivated for him. He’s thinking why fight Froch after seeing what I did to Bute when he could earn a load of money by fighting Brian Magee in Denmark.”

Froch also spoke about his desire to get into the pound-for-pound top 10 rankings and believes he needs to beat Kessler to that.

Assuming Froch does as expected in beating Mack on Saturday night in Nottingham, he will be hoping to end his career on a high, with three big fights and he hopes three big wins against Bute, Kessler and Ward. I think he beats Bute easily once again but Kessler will be tough but Froch has shown massive improvements since the first fight and Kessler hasn’t looked as good, so Froch could sneak a decision in this one. However I think Ward would be a step too far, as I believe Ward outside of Mayweather and Pacquiao, is alongside Martinez and Donaire in being one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

So if I am right and Froch does beat Bute and Kessler next year, it will be hard to argue that he should go down as one of the greatest Super Middleweights in British boxing history. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if has a few more fights if he loses to Ward, against the likes of Pascal, Cleverly and Groves. Unfortunately though, I think he may never fulfil his desire to be a top 10 pound-for-pound fighter.
