Flyweights Viloria & Marquez put on the best show of the weekend

By Gareth Rees: You would of seen the boxing headlines all focused on the big wins by Carl Froch (30-2) and Adrien Broner (25-0), but arguably two of the most significant fights in terms of their division and definitely most exciting took place in the Los Angeles Sports Arena and was broadcast in America on the little known Wealth TV network.

The card was headlined by the bout unifying the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and Super World Boxing Association (WBA) Flyweight titles between Brian Viloria (32-3) and Hernan Marquez (34-2), with the co-main event featuring Roman Gonzalez (34-0) and Juan Francisco Estrada (23-2) for the WBA Light Flyweight title.

The main event was expected by many boxing writers to be a fight of the year contender as it had two of the top three fighters in the Flyweight division facing off and it didn’t disappoint. It started off with a bang in the first round and set a pattern for the rest of the fight as Viloria was initially in control using effective body punching but a counter left by Marquez whose nickname is “Tyson” seriously hurt Viloria. Marquez was quick to jump on Viloria and got him backed against the ropes and was throwing a flurry of punches but a beautifully timed right hook by Viloria sent Marquez straight to the canvas. Marquez got up from that and survived to hear the bell in their first round of the year candidate.

For the next few rounds Viloria dominated as he continued his body attack and seemed to hurt Marquez in round three, which led to Marquez trying to hold on a few times. Then round five, which I believe has to win round of the year, as it looked set to follow the same pattern as the previous three rounds, but then Marquez caught Viloria with a flush right hand and like in the first went on the attack. As Viloria tried to escape he went to the ground with the ref ruling it a push but Marquez was straight on the attack, but threw so many punches he got visibly tired and Viloria fought his way back and with a four punch combination ending in a straight right, sent Marquez to the canvas again.

Rounds six and seven followed the same pattern as rounds two, three and four with Viloria dominating with his body punching. But in rounds eight and nine Viloria’s punch output dropped massively and Marquez seemed to win both rounds as it seemed that Viloria was tiring. In round ten although Viloria was a bit busier Marquez was still on top, but as he had Viloria against the ropes Viloria threw a counter left hook that sent Marquez down for the third time. This time Marquez was really hurt as his legs had gone and there were two minutes left to go, so Viloria went on the attack and with just over a minute to go in the round Marquez’s corner threw in the towel to stop their fighter taking anymore punishment.

That fight won’t win fight of the year though as the Gonzalez-Estrada fight was even better. Gonzalez came in as a heavy favourite and knew if he won he would likely face the winner of the Viloria-Marquez fight. This fight is harder to describe how good it was, as Gonzalez was the obviously superior fighter and ended up winning a unanimous decision with the judges’ scorecards reading 118-110, 116-112 and 116-112. It was hard to argue with those scores, but the fight was unbelievable and quite tight as both fighters stood in the pocket pretty much all fight and just kept punching and hurt each other on several occasions. The best way to describe the fight is it was a war, with Gonzalez dominating just under two minutes of most rounds, yet many rounds were see-saw affairs.

The winners of this weren’t just the fans who watched this instead of Adrien Broner on TV, but the little known channel that aired the fight called Wealth TV. They probably didn’t pay too much to cover the fight but had Larry Holmes as a commentator and no doubt got a big increase in subscriptions after people have heard or seen the fights on You Tube. If you haven’t seen them, I seriously suggest you watch both fights as one could win fight of the year and one could win round of the year.
