Image: Dirrell to fight on 12/15 on Burns-Walsh undercardBy Scott Gilfoid: The now Floyd Mayweather Sr. trained Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14 KO’s) reportedly will be back in action against an opponent still to be determined on December 15th on the undercard of the Ricky Burns vs. Liam Walsh fight card at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, in London, United Kingdom. Mlive.com reports that Dirrell is being added to the card.

It’s interesting that the 29-year-old Dirrell is winding up on the undercard of a Burns vs. Walsh fight in the UK, as Dirrell is from the United States and his fans base is over there in Michigan area. I wouldn’t figure Dirrell to have too many boxing fans in England, especially after the trouble he gave to British fighter Carl Froch in the Super Six tournament when Dirrell came over to Nottingham and gave Froch a 12 round schooling, only to wind up on the receiving end of what many boxing fans, British fans included, felt was a robbery.

It would be that Dirrell is being positioned to fight Froch in a rematch OR someone like unbeaten Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves, who is fighting on the undercard against 43-year-old Glen Johnson. I kind of have my bouts about Groves being allowed to fight a talent like Dirrell especially given their sparring session that took place in the U.S a little whole ago. I heard rumors that Dirrell had to take it easy on Groves after seeing how easy he was to hit. Nothing much has changed in Groves’ game since then other than him getting a little older and suffering a string of injuries.

Here’s the undercard of the Burns-Walsh card:

George Groves vs. Glen Johnson
Billy Joe Saunders vs. Nick Blackwell
Tony Conquest vs. TBA
Chas Symonds vs. Bradley Skeete

As you can see this WEAK card can really use Andre Dirrell fighting in any capacity. It doesn’t matter who he fights, this card badly needs to have his talent lighting it up.

Dirrell hasn’t fought since last December and he needs to get busy because he’s only once in the last two years. He should have been a world champion years ago and he’s being wasted like this. Dirrell is now being trained by Mayweather Sr. in Las Vegas, who replaced Dirrell’s previous trainer Leon Lawson Jr, his uncle. Dirrell has already learned a great deal from Mayweather Sr. You can see that watching video of Dirrell. He’s now got the shoulder roll going, and looking more and more like Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the way he fights. Mayweather Sr. is having Dirrell develop his jab more to make it a bigger portion of his offense compared to the past. Dirrell already has one of the best jabs in all of boxing but he just doesn’t utilize it enough. Mayweather Sr. is going to have Dirrell using it a lot from now on.

Dirrell is still being promoted by 50 Cent’s SMS Promotional company and hopefully he can start doing something with this valuable talent’s career. 50 Cent talked about having Dirrell fight WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward in the near future, but Dirrell says that fight won’t happen for a while yet until he gets active action. I’d rather see Dirrell pick off Groves, James DeGale and then Carl Froch before he gets to Ward. That will give Dirrell an opportunity to get in some nice fights to get the ring rust off before he tackles the major project of trying to beat the best fighter in the super middleweight division in Ward.
