Image: De La Hoya: Deontay Wilder is a future heavyweight world championBy Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya is really high on the potential for unbeaten heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (25-0, 25 KO’s) and he sees Wilder’s potential as being sky high for the young 27-year-old knockout artist from Alabama. De La Hoya sees Wilder as being a future world heavyweight champion, and he sees him realizing that potential in the near future.

De La Hoya said on his twitter “Checkout the future heavyweight U.S champion Bronzebomber [Deontay Wilder]. 6’7″, solid mad skills, 25-0, 25 KO’s.”

De La Hoya knows how to spot talent from a million miles away and he’s intelligent enough to know that Wilder is the of the heavyweight division. There’s no one that can really compete with him once the Klitschkos have aged out and retired from boxing. The closest competitor that Wilder has is 6’4 1/2″ Kubrat Pulev, but he doesn’t have the power to compete with Wilder. I like Pulev’s jab alright, but the power is completely missing from his game.

Britain has a couple of heavyweights in David Price and Tyson Fury that they’re excited about, but those guys are incredibly flawed and not in the same league as Wilder is in my estimation. Price would likely fold up like a cheap suit once he gets hit with the first right hand from Wilder. We’re talking first round knockout, and Fury would get dropped and finished off within two rounds at best. Those guys aren’t going to be able to compete with Wilder once he occupies his heavyweight thrown.

Wilder has a fight coming up on Showtime next month against a very, very talented Kelvin Price (13-0, 6 KO’s) on December 15th at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. The 6’7″ Price is a very good fighter, and I rate him top 6 in talent in the division. Price is going to be an excellent test for Wilder and it’ll be a great showcase for his talent if he can get Price out of there.
