Image: Canelo Alvarez might not be happy seeing Guerrero get Mayweather fightBy Dan Ambrose: If Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer makes a deal between his fighter WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 kO’s) for a fight in early next year, Schaefer could wind up stepping on the toes of his young star WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who has recently told Golden Boy that he absolutely wants the Mayweather fight on May 4th of next year.

If Golden Boy wants to keep Alvarez happy they’re going to need to think hard before they look to put together a fight between Guerrero and Mayweather. Alvarez is only 22, and has a long career ahead of him, a lot longer than the time that Guerrero and Mayweather both have left.

It might be in Golden Boy’s best interest to keep Alvarez happy so that he stays within the fold and doesn’t leave the promotional company due to him not getting the fights that he wants. Seeing Guerrero jump ahead of him and get the fighter that he’s been hoping to fight first might not please Alvarez. He’s an adult obviously and isn’t going to pout, but you don’t want to anger a young star like Alvarez if you’re Golden Boy. Having Schaefer working on trying to put together a fight between Guerrero and Mayweather could upset Alvarez, because he was counting on Golden Boy working to put him in with Mayweather.

Mayweather hasn’t come out publically and said he wants Guerrero or Alvarez, but Schaefer said yesterday that there’s interest from Mayweather’s side in the Guerrero bout.

Schaefer is going to have to be really careful how he goes about putting the Guerrero vs. Mayweather fight together, because it’s very likely going to upset Alvarez because he’s being kind of pushed to the side in this so that Guerrero can get the big money fight against Mayweather.

What would be really bad is if Guerrero were to beat Mayweather, because that would take a lot of the interest out of a future Mayweather vs. Alvarez bout. Mayweather’s unbeaten record is one of the things that makes him such an appealing fighter. He won’t have that same allure once he’s beaten for the first time.
