Image: Bradley not interested in Mike Alvarado bout, wants RiosBy Chris Williams: In a boxing club type move, WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (29-0, 12 KO’s) is reportedly being offered the recently beaten light welterweight Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) for his next fight in 2013, according to Examiner.com. However, Bradley has no interest in fighting a guy that is coming off of a 7th round TKO defeat to Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) last October, and instead he wants Rios. Alvarado, Rios and Bradley all fight for Top Rank promotions.

You can’t blame Bradley for not being pleased at the thought of fighting Alvarado, a guy that just lost instead of Rios. There’s no gain in fighting Alvarado, and I don’t know of too many boxing fans that would want to see Alvarado fighting for a world title off of a knockout loss. How do you do that? That’s not a good product for fans of the sport to be seeing a guy like Alvarado get a world title fight off of a defeat.

That just seems like club fighting where a boxing club has it’s members fighting mostly each other over and over again whether they win or lose. I don’t mind Alvarado fighting for a world title at some point but shouldn’t he have to at least redeem himself first? And what’s up with a light welterweight like Alvarado fighting for a title at welterweight? What about all the contenders at 147 that would be skipped over if Alvarado were to be given a title shot against Bradley? If I’m Bradley I wouldn’t fight Alvarado. Forget that.

If he can’t get Rios – and of course Pacquiao – then Bradley wants Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi, Robert Guerrero or Andre Berto, according to writer Chris Robinson of examiner.com. Those aren’t bad picks, although I kind of doubt that Bradley will be given a shot against any of them due to their Golden Boy Promotions affiliation.

Unfortunately for Bradley, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is interested in matching the 26-year-old Rios up with his #1 Top Rank stable fighter Manny Pacquiao in April of next year, so that takes Rios off the table for Bradley. It was Bradley who defeated Pacquiao last June and he’s not being given a second shot at beating him again. I guess Arum doesn’t want to take a second chance at Bradley being able to out-box Pacquiao with movement. Pacquiao looked lost with the little bit of movement that Bradley used in the fight and then ran out of gas in the second half of the fight and that allowed Bradley to earn a 12 round decision.
