Berto is a step too far for Robert Guerrero

Image: Berto is a step too far for Robert GuerreroBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KO’s) would like nothing better than to get a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. that would set him up for life in grand fashion. This is why Berto is going to be looking to not waste any time in beating the pumped up lightweight Robert Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO’s) later this month in their fight on November 24th at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California.

It’s not personal with Berto; it’s just the Guerrero is in his way and he’s going to remove him from his path by looking to knock him out in their fight on HBO. Guerrero is technically a champion in that he’s the WBC interim welterweight champion, but few boxing fans see interim champs as real champions so I’ll leave it at that.

It’s a nothing strap but the importance of having that placeholder strap is that it puts Berto in line for a fight with Mayweather, who holds down the full World Boxing Council title, and not the minor interim strap like Guerrero.

Whether Berto can get a title shot against Mayweather remains to be seen. It might not matter that Berto destroys the weak punching Guerrero on November 24th. If Mayweather doesn’t want any part of Berto then he’ll have to be satisfied with just beating Guerrero and putting himself in position to grab the WBC 147 lb title as soon as Mayweather vacates or is stripped of it by the WBC.

Guerrero picked up the WBC interim 147 lb title recently by beating #1 WBC Selcut Aydin by a 12 round decision last July. It wasn’t a good performance by Guerrero but he got the job done against a guy that hit much harder than him. Guerrero showed a lack of power and seems to have his power behind him at lightweight.

The undercard fights are as follows:

Richard Abril, #1 WBA, fighting #3 WBA Sharif Bogere for the vacant World Boxing Association lightweight title. It’s a fight that can go either way.

In junior middleweight action, prospect Keith Thurman faces Carlos Quintana in what could be a very exciting fight. Thurman can punch like a mule kicks, but he’s slow and doesn’t have much balance with his offensive attack. He overuses his left hook and doesn’t have much of a right hand or a jab.
