Image: Austin Trout on his way to stardom if he beats CottoBy Dan Ambrose: We could be seeing the passing of a torch on December 1st when the 32-year-old Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) fights unbeaten WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) in this battle on Showtime at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Cotto is the big name that the 27-year-old Trout has been missing from his fight resume to help make a star in the sport. He needs the aging Cotto’s name to give him a boost to the top.

Trout won’t become a pay per view star with a win over Cotto, but he’ll definitely get pushed up high with a win, especially if it’s an impressive stoppage win similar to the one that Antonio Margarito got against Cotto back in 2008.

Cotto is approaching this fight much in the same way he did when he faced previously unbeaten former World Boxing Association 154 pound champion Yuri Foreman in June 2010. Cotto was able to beat Foreman by a 9th round stoppage to pick up his WBA title. That gave Cotto a little life after having been stopped in his previous fight against Manny Pacquiao in 2009.

The difference in this fight compared to the Foreman fight is that Trout is a lot better fighter than Foreman was. He’s a lot more sturdy without an existing injury like the one that Foreman had with his bad right knee. Trout also has a lot more power and superior boxing skills compared to Foreman. He’s not someone that will fold up as soon as he’s pressured by Cotto. Trout has got a lot of advantages over Cotto in this fight, and I’m expecting him to send Cotto hurdling down to another defeat.

Cotto really needs a knockout to win this fight because he’s not going to be able to out-box Trout. That’s not going to happen because that’s Trout’s game. He’s a pure boxer but one with good power. He prefers to box but he can take you out if you try to trade with him. It’s up to Cotto how he wants to play this fight. He can look to survive by playing it safe or he can risk fate and go right after Trout.
