Image: Amir Khan v Vyacheslav Senchenko In 2013 Makes Perfect SenseBy @berniesboxing: With all the hype surrounding Ricky Hatton in recent months it’s been easy to forget about the demons Amir Khan must be facing himself right now. After receiving the 2nd devastating knockout loss of his career, all the same questions have arisen.

The main one being does he have a good enough chin for this sport? Anyone who knows boxing knows, it is possible to have a successful career even with a dodgy chin. I don’t actually think Khan’s chin is bad at all; the problem is he leaves himself so open at times to be hit bang on the button. He must learn to put his head down and move in and out quickly after throwing combinations. He made Garcia look extremely limited until he got caught with one monster punch. In what was looking like a comfortable Khan victory suddenly turned into a nightmare for the young Bolton fighter.

Now he has left Freddie Roach and is working with Virgil Hunter, who is trainer of defensive expert, Andre Ward. This can only be good news; I think Amir will be well away from the distractions of LA and the wild card gym.
On Saturday night we witnessed something very special. The crowd and the emotion of Ricky Hatton’s return was like nothing I have ever experienced in boxing.

Everyone was behind the Hitman, hoping for one last adventure, a fairy tale ending perhaps? It just wasn’t to be though and it was heart breaking seeing Hatton fail to get to his feet after taking a hard body shot. It made for a sombre night for all his fans, me included. But Hatton just didn’t seem to have the engine anymore, pressure fighters often have a shorter career in boxing and he was to be no exception.

From a negative we can find a positive. Those fans who hadn’t thought about boxing for 3 ½ years were suddenly conscious again, if Saturday didn’t give them back that boxing appetite then nothing will. This is where Khan can win his own battle and maybe even finally win over the British public on a much larger scale.

Khan has a fight lined up with Carlos Molina in 3 weeks’ time. I don’t see him having any problems in this; Molina doesn’t have the experience or the power to trouble Khan.

Next year however, Khan should fight Senchenko in the UK and finish the job Hatton started. Senchenko’s style is made for Khan and I’d be surprised to see the Ukrainian still standing at the end.

Another big crowd, another exciting night, but this time…a happy ending for the home support.
