3 Reasons Why Guerrero Can Beat Mayweather

Image: 3 Reasons Why Guerrero Can Beat MayweatherBy Gil Ortiz: In case you missed it Robert Guerrero defeated Andre Berto by a 12 round unanimous decision this past Saturday in what was a very impressive performance put forth by “The Ghost.” After the fight Guerrero was asked about who he wanted to face next, and it was no surprise that he called out Floyd Mayweather. It seems these days that its a popular thing to do in a post-fight interview. Manny Pacquiao does it (well, his trainer Freddie Roach calls out Floyd more than Manny does), Sergio Martinez does it, and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez does it. So why not add Guerrero to the list?

This is the list of potential candidates who may land a fight with Floyd in 2013. However, Floyd is his own boss and fights only when he wants, who he wants, and where he wants. There’s nothing more important to Mayweather then his undefeated record, and when you look at this list of potential candidates, Robert Guerrero poses less of a threat to that undefeated streak, but this is boxing and any man can win on any given night.

So here are 3 reasons why I believe Robert Guerrero can pull off the huge upset:

* Guerrero’s aggressive style: Saturday night Guerrero roughed up Berto and managed to knock him down twice early in the fight. Guerrero forced Berto to the ropes multiple times and threw combinations nicely to the body and head. This past May, Mayweather fought Miguel Cotto in what turned out to be one of the most roughest fights Mayweather has ever been in. Cotto fought the fight very aggressively and forced Mayweather to throw more punches and take more risks. I still can’t get the image of Floyd’s bloody nose out of mind. I believe Guerrero would be even more aggressive and force Floyd to fight instead of box. Guerrero bruised Berto’s face up during their fight, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did the same to Floyd.

* Father Time: Floyd Mayweather is 35 years old and will turn 36 this February, and no matter how good Floyd is his fighting style requires elite reflexes and that’s the very first thing father time takes from an aging fighter. It doesn’t help either that Floyd tends to take long layoffs between fights. He could of fought this December but didn’t. Guerrero has been fighting actively and has only looked better after every fight, and going strong at age 29. There’s no stopping the local from Gilroy, CA.

* Anything can happen: Boxing works in weird ways and sometimes the fighter who should win loses, and the fighter who should lose shocks the world. Buster Douglas comes to mind whenever you discuss this topic because he was the ultimate underdog that defeated “Iron” Mike Tyson in his prime for the very first time. Since Floyd is undefeated everybody wants to know who may be that one underdog who can snatch that zero from his record. Well look no further Robert Guerrero is that guy.

If this fight indeed does happen (which I believe it will), it doesn’t mean Guerrero will win it because I said so in this article. The same way I gave you 3 reasons why Guerrero would win, I could give you 3 reasons why Mayweather would beat Guerrero, but that’s another article. However. if Guerrero wins, it would shoot him straight up to elite superstardom and he will receive much love from all the Mayweather haters out there, but if Floyd wins, he’ll just be adding another W to his record and the mega-fight with Pacquiao is still in the cards that’s been the plan, but something tells me that Robert Guerrero doesn’t plan on following the script.
