Vazquez Jr stops Oquendo; Fuentes obliterates Calderon

By Jim Dower: Despite having lost recent fights against Nonito Donaire and Jorge Arce, former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (22-2-1, 19 KO’s) showed that he’s still a cut above the likes of #2 WBO Jonathan Oquendo (22-3, 15 KO’s), beating him by a 7th round TKO on Saturday night at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Vazquez Jr., 28, knocked Oquendo down in the 7th, causing the referee to halt the bout at 2:33 of the round.

Oquendo was effective early with his pressure and hard power shots. It looked as if he was on his way to winning the fight. However, Vazquez Jr. came on from the 5th round on to batter Oquendo and eventually get the stoppage.

37-year-old former two division world champion Ivan Calderon’s problems in the ring continued with him losing to WBO minimumweight champion Moises Fuentes (16-1, 8 KO’s) by a 5th round knockout after knocking Calderon down three times. Calderon fought well initially, making Fuentes miss with a lot of his big power shots. However, Fuentes started finding more success in cutting off the ring and trapping Calderon against the ropes in the 4th. In the 5th, Fuentes’ power was too much for the aging Calderon, as he knocked him down three times in the round before the fight was finally halted. The referee halted the bout at 1:22 of the 5th.

Calderon has now been stopped in three out of his last four fights, and if that’s not a sign that he should start considering retirement than I don’t know what is. Before last night’s fight, Calderon had been stopped twice by Giovani Segura in the last two years.

Unbeaten WBO Latino lightweight champion Jose A Gonzalez (21-0, 16 KO’s) looked impressive in destroying Oscar Cuero (15-8, 12 KO’s) in a 1st round blowout. Gonzalez, ranked #4 WBO at lightweight, knocked Cuero down twice in the round with nice body shots to get the knockout. The fight was officially stopped at 1:54.

Big 6’4″ heavyweight Victor Bisbal (21-1, 15 KO’s) stopped Alex Gonzalez (20-8, 10 KO’s) in the 6th round due to Gonzalez having suffered some bad cuts.
