By Dan Ambrose: World Boxing Council president Jose Sulaiman is deeply concerned with the punishment that 36-year-old Erik Morales (52-9, 36 KO’s) took in getting stopped in the 4th round last Saturday night by WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16 KO’s) at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York.

Morales told the WBC at suljos.com “Erik is a very deep friend of mind and that is why I want him to take a MRI before deciding to fight another bout or not.”

Morales has taken beatings in his two fights with Garcia, as well as his loss to Marcos Maidana. All three fights were pretty brutal with the punishment that Morales took, but especially last Saturday with Morales being blasted out by a huge left hook by Garcia that knocked Morales senseless and almost out of the ring.

Morales is already talking about fighting in Mexico despite the loss. The fight in Mexico will likely be his final fight of his career, unless Morales gets some ideas if he looks good in beating whoever they dig up for him in terms of competition. It’s not likely that Morales will be put in with someone too good because he’s not looked good in his last two fights. He went from looking pretty decent in his fight with Maidana to plain awful in the last two Garcia fights. It could be that the punishment that Morales took in the Maidana fight caused him to deteriorate further to where he was just a shell of what he was in that fight. Morales was already pretty well shot going into the Maidana fight, but he looks even worse now.

Morales was one of the best fighters in boxing a decade ago with his wars against Marco Antonio Barrera. However, he’s aged through the years and his weight problems obviously haven’t helped him.

What’s hurt Morales in his comeback is that he’ moved up in weight and is fighting three divisions above his best weight class, and that’s not helped him.
