Image: Sergio Martinez picked Boxer of the Month by WBCBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) has been selected as the Boxer of the Month by the World Boxing Council for his impressive 12 round unanimous decision over former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) last month on September 15th in a fight where Martinez was knocked down in the 12th round but bravely got up to finish out the fight on his feet.

What made the win even more impressive for Martinez was how he fought back despite being badly hurt in the 12th round by Chavez Jr. Not only was Martinez able to fight back but he was the one landing the shot as time ran out in the last round. It was truly a great performance from the 37-year-old Martinez.

The WBC gave Saul “Canelo” Alvarez Honorable Mention for his 4 round blowout of light welterweight Josesito Lopez. However, I think the World Boxing Council should have saved that title for someone a little more worthy than Alvarez, because Golden Boy Promotions selected a fighter in Lopez who had only recently moved up to welterweight and won his last fight against Victor Ortiz on an injury rather than outright winning it. Lopez was losing the fight when the bout was halted due to Ortiz having suffered a broken jaw. I think the WBC could have at least picked a fighter that was fighting someone from his own weight class rather than a fat looking Lopez, who was basically moving up two weight divisions to fight Alvarez.

The Martinez-Chavez Jr. fight was tainted recently after it was learned that Chavez Jr. tested positive for marijuana after the fight. Martinez’s win was still impressive, but it’s not quite as impressive in my eyes now that it’s been revealed that Chavez Jr. had used marijuana in the weeks before the fight.

A rematch between Chavez Jr. and Martinez will be taking place next year after Chavez Jr’s upcoming suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and Martinez’s injuries to his right knee, left hand and left eye are healed up.
