Image: Sergio Martinez not worried about Chavez Jr. rematchBy Chris Williams: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) isn’t worried in the slightest about facing former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) in a rematch next year after Chavez Jr’s completes his suspension for testing positive for marijuana. Martinez sees it as an easy fight, but he wants to make sure that he’s paid more for the rematch than he was the first time around now that he’s the champion.

Martinez told Boxinginsider.com “I believe I did enough damage with my fists. As I always said, Chavez only has his physical size.”

Martinez did give Chavez Jr. a real beating with the exception of the 12th round, and the rematch likely won’t be any different. Chavez Jr’s loyal fans want to believe that he could have won that fight had there been more time in the round, and those are the ones that will gladly pay the big money on pay per view to see the fight a second time. However, for boxing fans who had their eyes open in watching that fight, they’ll realize that this is just an attempt at a money grab by the promoters for the two fighters and they’ll not waste their hard earned money on seeing this pitiful rematch a second time.

If Bob Arum wants boxing fans to pay to see Martinez whip Chavez Jr. a second time, then Arum needs to reduce the price on the fight by 95% to reflect the one-sided nature of the first fight because you can predict the future by looking at the past in fights like this. Arum can’t possibly expect boxing fans to dump $49.95 to see Chavez Jr. come into the ring at 180 lbs, looking slow, throwing few punches and just eating shots all night long from Martinez. Chavez Jr. looked like a poor cruiserweight that wondered into the ring thinking it was a cruiserweight match and got his backside handed to him by Martinez.

If there’s going to be a rematch then Martinez needs to push for a rehydration limit because there’s got to be an even playing field for this fight. You can’t have Chavez Jr. out-weighing Martinez by tons of weight because it’s not right. The World Boxing Council should be doing their job by trying to protect the fighters by having some kind of limit to what guys like Chavez Jr. can rehydrate up to. The same with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The rematch will probably take place in Texas, so I wouldn’t expect the Texas Commission to try and control how much Chavez Jr. can rehydrate up to. However, Martinez needs to have that in the contract or opt to move on.
