Image: Price still making excuses for fighting SkeltonBy Scott Gilfoid: The David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) vs. 45-year-old Matt Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s) has a new date and will be taking place on November 30th instead of December 15th. The fight will take place at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom, which is no different from the original plan for the mismatch. I mean, fight.

The interesting part is that the 29-year-old Price is still making excuses for why he’s fighting another old guy that’s well beneath him instead of better fighters that are fitting for an ex-2008 Olympic Bronze medalist with loads of amateur experience.

Price said “I’m aware he [Skelton] is 45, but he has won major championships and challenged for a world title. I have only boxed 14 times as a professional and still learning and Matt will bring something new for me.”

What a disappointing excuse, isn’t it?

The championships that Price is referring to are the British, Commonwealth and EBU heavyweight titles. In other words, lower level straps that pale in comparison to the world belts. So Price is making a big deal about Skelton holding down domestic level and briefly the EBU title. How sad.

Boxing fans are starting to wonder if Price is going to spend the better part of his career fighting for domestic level straps instead of going after the bigger belts. Price appears to be playing it safe, and you have to wonder why? Is Price trying to cover up a weak chin by staying as long as possible at the domestic level or is he simply afraid to move up and fight the best?

The talented Deontay Wilder is also facing mediocre opposition, but he has an excuse. He’s only 26-years-old and he fought only a handful of times as an amateur. He’s not like Price, who had tons of fights while fighting as an amateur. Price is also three years older than Wilder, and he’s at a point where he’s about to turn 30 and yet he’s still fighting old guys like 40-year-old Audley Harrison and 45-year-old Matt Skelton.

Unless I miss my guess, Price will be fighting 41-year-old Martin Rogan after the Skelton fight. You can you imagine what Price’s resume will look like if he does that? He’ll have fought fighters by the ages of 40, 45 and 41 in consecutive fights.
