Erik Morales unified world light-welterweight title rematch. This week Peter took some time to talk with me ahead of his career-defining title fight.

If there is one word you can use to describe Peter Quillin, the fighter, it would probably be ‘dedicated’. An unbeaten seven-year career has now finally seen him gain the recognition he deserves. “Nothing was ever handed to me. This is something that all my hard work has got me. All the wins that I got, all the people that they put in front of me, I never denied a fight, I’m the guy that always said yes.” He continued, “This is a business, this is how I earn my living. I’ll tell you right now, seven years of my life has been dedicated to boxing, it’s just now paying off and I’m actually making money that was well deserved for the hard work that I put in.”

Going into the biggest fight of his life, Peter continues to train at the Wild Card gym in Hollywood, California. It’s the venue that’s given him the opportunity to spar with fellow world-class middleweights like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Gennady Golovkin and hold his own. With less than three weeks to go until fight night, he’s happy with the way training is going. “I did eleven rounds today and another eleven rounds with two different guys. I feel sharp and ready to put the work in that I been putting in in the gym, hard work. So when you see me perform on October 20th, that’s what people will get inspired from, they gonna see an artist paint a picture and that’s what they gonna get.”

The Showtime televised broadcast will feature no less than four world championship fights on the card. It’s most likely that Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam will be the fighter least known by the fans in Brooklyn or watching at home. He’s somewhat of an unknown quantity outside France. “I have my reasons to fight, just like Hassan, that’s why I’m giving him that respect. He has his reasons why he took this fight and wanted to come to my backyard. He’s disrespecting me! Coming to my backyard, he trying to rotate all the pressure on me but when I get in there it’s not about nobody else besides me and him.”

In his last fight, Quillin defeated the legendary ‘Winky’ Wright by a comfortable unanimous decision and force him into retirement. There was another legendary fighter that Quillin was thinking about after the fight. “I felt good getting revenge for (Felix) Trinidad. Trinidad was one of my favourite fighters coming up watching (the sport). He beat Trinidad, I was kinda peed off. I kinda used that for motivation and get the win back for Trinidad but at the same time, you know, Winky Wright, if that’s what he feels he has to do (retire) I give all faith to that because only Winky Wright is able to tell himself when it’s too much. He never really took a lot of punishment in his career but he is old and I’m glad he gave me the opportunity to showcase my talent and every fight from now on is about me showcasing my talent, it’s not about the other fighters, it’s about me.”

The 160lbs division is stacked with international talent at the moment. Guys like Sergio Martinez, Daniel Geale, Felix Sturm, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Gennady Golovkin, Dmitry Pirog, Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray to name but a few. The winner of Quillin Vs. N’Jikam will throw themselves right into the upper echelon of the division. “If you get caught trying to worry about all these other people you forget about your present and who you are and that’s what I’m not trying to forget about. I’m past the level where I’m trying to make a name for myself, now I got guys calling me out because I have what they want, so I’m very blessed and I’m able to go out there and perform the way I do and be able to learn from my performances.”

Not only is the event a huge moment for Peter, it’s a huge moment for the New York borough of Brooklyn. The Barclays Center was only opened on September 21st and will host four world championship fights on October 20th. Being a native of Brooklyn, this will be a special night for ‘Kid Chocolate’. “I’m very blessed to have you give me a call getting ready for one of the biggest opportunities of my life and be a part of this. This is all a moment that I wish everybody could be part of and I wish everybody could know how I feel. This fight right here is gonna define me as a world champion and define what kind of fighter that I really am. I’m very blessed to be able to come in and bring my story to the sport of boxing and hope that on my journey I can inspire all the fans and even the haters, they only generate me and motivate me to be even more of a force to be reckoned with.”
