Image: Khan: I want to clean up the 140 lb division and move up to 147 next yearBy Scott Gilfoid: Sadly, former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan is still talking about wanting to clean up the light welterweight division and then moving up to 147 to campaign as a welterweight despite being whipped in his last two fights.

Khan still thinks he’s going to beat the top guys at light welterweight and then go on to bigger and better things. You’d think he would have downsized his ambitions at this point and picked up some more realistic/achievable goals.

Khan said on Sky Ringside “I’m thinking of moving up to 147, but I want to clean up the division [140 lb] first. There are a few things I want to do at 140. If I had won my last fight I would have moved up to the next weight.”

I wonder what Khan means by a “Few things”? Well, one of them is the light hitting Carlos Molina, who Khan will be fighting on December 15th, but I don’t see how that even counts as something worthwhile given that Molina isn’t even a light welterweight. How is Khan cleaning up the light welterweight division by facing a light hitting lightweight? Okay, so I guess if Khan is going to be cleaning up the light welterweight division he’s going to have to get a lot of mileage out of the other two fights that he plans on having. One of those fights would likely be against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, who knocked Khan out in the 4th round last July.

The other guy that is probably on Khan’s radar is IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, who beat Khan last December by a 12 round decision. There are some problems with this scenario, though. Garcia has to fight Lucas Matthysse in early 2013, unless he’s willing to accept a step aside payment so that Khan and Garcia can fight a rematch. That’s probably what we’ll see. If not, then I given Matthysse an excellent chance of beating Garcia. Matthysse is a better fighter and a more two-fisted guy. He’s not totally reliant on his left hand like Garcia.

Khan won’t beat Matthysee, no way. That’s not going to happen. And if Khan fights Garcia again, he’s going to blasted out for a second time. Garcia’s win over Khan wasn’t a fluke thing. You could tell that Garcia was going to get to Khan sooner or later the moment the fight started. Even when Khan was fighting defensively in the first couple of rounds, it was easy to see that Khan was going to get knocked out in the fight. I saw it and sure enough it happened.

Khan won’t be cleaning up the light welterweight division, and if he wants to move up to 147, he certainly can but after he gets knocked out by Garcia or Matthysse. Can Khan beat Peterson? Maybe, but I don’t think Khan will move up in weight with just that win. He’ll want to fight Garcia again and that’s where he’ll get exposed for the second time.
