Image: Kell Brook says he'l retire if he doesn't beat Saldivia on SaturdayBy Scott Gilfoid: First it was Carl Froch talking about retiring if he didn’t beat Arthur Abraham in the Super Six tournament in 2010, and now it’s undefeated welterweight contender Kell Brook (28-0, 18 KO’s) saying he’ll hang it up if he can’t beat Argentinian Hector Saldivia (41-2, 32 KO’s) on Saturday night in their IBF welterweight eliminator bout at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

The 26-year-old Brook said to thesun.co.uk “People keep saying I have talent so if I can’t get rid of guys like Saldivia I don’t deserve to be at this level. That is why I’m saying I will pack it up if I don’t beat him on Saturday night.”

Brook should probably hold back on making a retirement threat over the Saldivia fight because Brook was pretty much shown in his last fight against Carson Jones that he’s not really one of the top players. That was a very questionable decision that got in that fight against Jones, and you can easily have picked Jones to win that fight. I know I did. While Brook won the first five rounds, possibly six, Jones rallied big time in the last six rounds and had Brook staggering around in the 12th like a drunk on Saturday night outside The Langley. Jones really dominated Brook and gave him a royal beating. How Brook can take that kind of punishment and look that bad and assume he’s going to beat anyone.

Brook has to win this fight if he wants to get a title shot against the winner of the Randall Bailey vs. Devon Alexander fight. But what’ll make it real bad for Brook if he loses to Saldivia is that he turned down a good paying bout against WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley that would have not only given Brook a massive amount of attention in the United States just by virtue of fighting the well known Bradley, but it would also have set Brook up with a potential big money fight against Pacquiao. Brook turned that fight down to face Saldivia, a fighter that few people have ever heard of before, and more still who likely will never hear of him again if he losses on Saturday.
