Hennessy: Tyson Fury could be heavyweight champion by next summer

Image: Hennessy: Tyson Fury could be heavyweight champion by next summerBy Scott Gilfoid: If I were to pick a can’t miss future heavyweight champion I wouldn’t for a second choose British heavyweight Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s), but his promoter Mick Hennessy sees him winning a world title and by next summer believe it or not.

Hennessy said to the Dailymail.co.uk “I think Tyson could be a world champion by next summer. The Price fight, when it happens, Tyson will take him out. It would be better if it was for a world title but we’ve got to see Price get hit on the whiskers and see how he reacts.”

Here’s my take on what Fury is capable of accomplishing: Right now, I see Fury as being in a place where he’s not even good enough to be the British heavyweight champion, let alone one of the three heavyweight world champs. I thinks it’s pretty well established that David Price would beat the brakes off of Fury if and when they ever fight, because Fury doesn’t possess the power to match up with him.

Fury is pretty much little more than a tall slapper with a fragile chin. Price has got a weak chin too, but he can punch a little, so I don’t see this as a winnable fight for Fury despite what his promoter Hennessy. And I don’t see any opportunities for Fury at the European level, because the EBU heavyweight champion is former Bulgarian Olympian Kubrat Pulev, who may be the 3rd best heavyweight in boxing right now behind Wladimir Klitschko #1 and Vitali Klitschko #2.

Fury wouldn’t beat the 6’4″ Pulev, and would end up getting jabbed into submission just like Alexander Ustinov was against Pulev. I don’t think Fury would do as well as Ustinov in taking the punishment that Pulev would be dishing out all night. It would be short, painful and brutal for Fury if he were to fight Pulev.

I have no idea who Hennessy thinks Fury will beat to capture a world title next summer. Hennessy must be counting on Vitali Klitschko retiring, and figuring that Fury, with his #4 WBC ranking, can then slide on in and capture the vacant World Boxing Council title against the likes of Chris Arreola or Bermane Stiverne. I don’t see that as a realistic option for Fury, and I hope that Hennessy isn’t counting on that happening because it won’t. Stiverne and Arreola hit WAY too hard for Fury, and they’d likely poleaxe him just like Deontay Wilder would. If anyone is going to be winning the vacant WBC heavyweight title next year it’s going to be Arreola or Stiverne, and certainly not Fury.
