Image: Donaire destroys Nishioka in sad mismatchBy Chris Williams: As expected, IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) destroyed the old veteran Toshiaki Nishioka (39-5-3, 24 KO’s) tonight by a 9th round TKO at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California. Donaire completely dominated the fight from start to finish, knocking the 36-year-old Nishioka down in the 6th and a final time in the 9th round get the win.

After getting dropped by a right hand in the 9th, Nishioka’s corner wisely stopped it. It’s not that Nishioka was badly hurt but rather he was totally ineffective he just looked old and not willing to really fight.

It was one of the poorer fights I’ve seen from Donaire, but it was what he had to work with. Nishioka just looked like a fighter that was on the verge of retirement who was coming back for one more fight. He looked rusty and didn’t seem like he belonged out there. What’s really sad was how Donaire had repeatedly said that Nishioka is the best fighter in the super bantamweight division while trying to hype the fight, and it just makes Donaire look kind of silly now because Nishioka looked like the worst of the worst tonight.

Anyone who had seen any of Nishioka’s recent fights couldn’t come to the same conclusion that Donaire had been by saying that Nishioka was the best fighter in the division. I don’t blame Donaire for wanting to hype his fight but it just looks like false advertising to me, like the way that Top Rank was trying to pump up Joshua Clottey as an exciting opponent for Manny Pacquiao two years ago, when the reality was the opposite of that.

Nishioka didn’t belong in the ring tonight and it’s so sad that Donaire had been saying he’s best guy in the division. Clearly, he’s not and it’s disappointing that Donaire won’t fight the guys that are the best – Abner Mares and Guillermo Rigondeaux.

With this victory Donaire will likely fight someone like Jorge Arce next, and it’ll be interesting to see if Donaire claims he’s the best fighter in the super bantamweight division in trying to promote the fight.
