Does Mayweather only fight when he’s broke?

Image: Does Mayweather only fight when he's broke?By Mohammad Malik: CEO of Top Rank, Bob Arum, speaking with esnewsreporting.com, said that he had lunch with someone who knows Floyd Mayweather Jr. and this is what the guy told him about Floyd, “Floyd only likes to fight wants to fight when he’s broke.” If that is true then we can probably forget about seeing Floyd in action for remainder of the year.

Mayweather reportedly made around $40 million from his fight with former WBA Super World junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto last May. It’s not as if I was expecting Manny Pacquiao and Floyd to fight this year, but I was hoping to see Floyd fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez sometime in December.

I don’t think Canelo has the experience to beat Floyd at this point, but I can’t think of anyone else who could really provide Floyd with a stern test. Canelo also brings a large fan base, so it would make sense for Floyd to take the fight. WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez is recovering from the injury he suffered from his bout with Chavez Jr. So he cannot be considered. WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley is reportedly fighting Lamont Peterson in December, so he is not a possibility.

I can’t really think of anyone else who would be marketable as well as prove competitive at the same time. My guess is that we won’t be seeing him before Cinco de Mayo, and that’s when we can expect him to step back in the ring against someone like Canelo. As long as Canelo doesn’t get beat badly in his next fight. I highly doubt that Canelo will be matched against someone who poses a threat, because Golden Boy Promotions will protect him until he can land a big fight against Cotto or Mayweather Jr.
