Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah: A good stay busy tune-up for Danny

Image: Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah: A good stay busy tune-up for DannyBy Dan Ambrose: It appears that Golden Boy Promotions has their minds made up to put WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16 KO’s) in with 34-year-old Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KO’s) against a much tougher opponent in #1 WBC Lucas Matthysse next.

You can’t really blame Golden Boy for wanting to milk Garcia’s title run because Matthysse is good enough to possibly beat Garcia, and that’s not good business for Golden Boy to have Garcia beaten. He’s quickly becoming a little money maker for Golden Boy, and who knows?

He could end up a pay per view star if they can keep away from guys like Matthysse. Judah is perfect for Garcia, because he’s pretty well on his way to becoming a shot fighter, and has left his best well behind him many years ago. Judah is good enough to maybe give Garcia a good couple of rounds before getting destroyed in the 3rd or 4th round. Judah is like a slightly younger version of Erik Morales. In other words, Judah is a recognizable name to the casual boxing fan that can bring money for Golden Boy and Garcia, while at the same time not presenting any real risk involved due to his age and wear and tear on his body from past fights.

If Golden Boy was thinking about the boxing fans then they would look to put Garcia in with Matthysse, Brandon Rios, Mike Alvarado or Ajose Olusegun. Those are far better fights in my estimation than putting Judah in their to watch him fight tentatively before getting knocked out in a one-sided fight. I know Judah has a win over Matthysse from two years ago, but that wasn’t any kind of real win. Judah won the first four rounds and then clearly lost the last 8 rounds and was even knocked down in the 10th. That was really poor judging in my view for the two judges that gave Judah the win.

If Golden Boy isn’t interested in matching Garcia against some good light welterweights then I wouldn’t mind seeing Garcia fight some welterweights like Victor Ortiz, Andre Berto, Mike Jones or Devon Alexander.

Garcia will be back in the ring in February or March of next year. Right now, Judah is the only name that Golden Boy has mentioned for him to be fighting. Hopefully, this will change because it’s disappointing to see fighters taking stay busy fights like Judah. I think it would be a good stay busy fight barring nothing else being available, but given that Mattysse is available, then I’d much prefer to see Garcia in a competitive fight rather than another mismatch involving him fighting another old guy. His last fight was against 36-year-old Erik Morales, and I see the 34-year-old Judah being pretty much in the same washed up league as Morales, maybe not quite as bad but still bad.
