Beltran thinks one of the things that could slow the rematch from taking place are the injuries – fractured left hand, cut left eye, and torn meniscus in right knee – that the 37-year-old Martinez suffered in the fight.

Beltran said to es.eurosport.yaoo.com “We want to do a rematch with Martinez after that tremendous final found and the truth is Martinez needs more time because he broke his hand and knee. The rematch will definitely be next year, I think in the first quarter.”

It’s interesting that Beltran believes that Martinez’s injuries could be the thing that stalls the rematch from taking place, because many boxing fans and writers feel that it’s going to be the young 26-year-old Chavez Jr’s suspension that he’ll receive from the Nevada State Athletic Commission that will get in the way of the fight taking place in the first quarter of next year. If Chavez Jr. receives a four month suspension then he could still make it by the first quarter of next year as long as the suspension starts soon. However, if they give Chavez Jr. a seven month suspension like he received in 2009 after testing position for diuretics then the rematch will have to wait until later in the year for to take place.

Chavez Jr. tested positive for marijuana last month in his fight with Martinez. It could be that the Commission might see marijuana as a harmless drug and could let Chavez Jr. off with a relatively minor suspension compared to last time when they gave him a 7 month suspension. Marijuana isn’t a performance enhancing drug, so there could be less of a penalty for this compared things steroids, growth hormone and diuretics.
