Image: Sulaiman unhappy that Chavez Jr's positive marijuana test was made publicBy Dan Ambrose: WBC president Jose Sulaiman isn’t pleased that news has leaked out about former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. testing positive for marijuana following his 12 round decision loss to Sergio Martinez last Saturday. Sulaiman, who is close to Chavez Jr., feels that the test results should have been kept secret until after a second test had been done to confirm the results.

Sulaiman said to Philboxing.com “Whoever released that note has committed a serious violation of confidentiality. According to anti-doping regulations, only the boxer, the Boxing Commission and the World Boxing Council, can be notified about the positive results.”

Sulaiman went on to say that if the results of the positive test are confirmed after a second test, Sulaiman said the WBC will punish Chavez Jr. by helping to rehabilitate him. However, Sulaiman didn’t say anything about suspending Chavez Jr., which would be the logical thing that you would assume would be dome given that this is the second time that Chavez Jr. has tested positive for a drug. The last time was in 2009 when Chavez Jr. tested positive for Furosomide, a diuretic drug that either be used to lose massive amounts of weight to make weight for a fight or to mask the use of steroids.

At this point it hardly matters who released the results of Chavez Jr’s positive marijuana test, because his promoter Bob Arum has already said to the LA Times that Chavez Jr. used marijuana three weeks before the Martinez fight in order to treat insomnia. I think Sulaiman is a little late by talking about Chavez Jr. still needing a second test. If his promoter is already talking about it as a given that he used the marijuana, then a second test result would seem kind of irrelevant at this point.
