Martinez, 37, says he’s going to fight the 26-year-old, 180 pound Chavez Jr. like he does all of his opponents by fighting him with his hands down by his sides and will depend on his quick reflexes to get out of the way of his shots.

Martinez said “I fought all 53 of my fights with my hands down. I did it with Paul Williams. I did it with Kelly Pavlik. Why not with Chavez? What will be the difference? I will do it again with my hands down.”

It actually might work in Martinez’s favor by having his hands down because Chavez Jr. is mainly a body puncher, and if he tries to land his body shots while Martinez’s hands are down he’s not likely to land many of his punches cleanly. Martinez will either block Chavez Jr’s body shots or partially block them enough to take away most of the power from them. Chavez Jr. is going to have fits as it is just trying to catch up to Martinez in order to go to the body, because Martinez not only fights with his hands down, but he moves constantly, making it difficult for body punchers like Chavez Jr. to catch up to him in order to go to the body.

Martinez will be hitting and running and making Chavez Jr. use up his energy trying to chase him down. Carrying around 180 lbs will be a negative for Chavez Jr. unless he’s able to get to Martinez by the 8th round. After that point, Martinez will up his game to another level by fighting harder and Chavez Jr. will take a beating just like Kelly Pavlik did in the last four rounds against Martinez.
