Image: Roach wanted Pacquiao to fight Danny Garcia to show Khan what he could do his conquerorBy William Mackay: Amir Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach revealed yesterday that he was hoping to match Manny Pacquiao up against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia to show Khan how good Pacquiao would do against the same guy that beat him. Roach obviously not happy at being let go by Khan as a trainer, seemed to be in the mood score points against him in this interview.

Speaking with writer Chris Robinson of examiner.com Roach said “I wanted him [Pacquiao] to fight the guy Garcia, Danny Garcia. I wanted that fight because Amir Khan says that I don’t teach defense to him and Manny Pacquiao. Why did he compare himself to Manny Pacquiao?…Let’s see what Manny does with your last opponent. Manny wouldn’t lose a round.”

Garcia would no doubt take a fight with Pacquiao in a second, but the chances of him getting Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum to agree to letting him get that fight are probably zero. Too bad. It would be great to see how Pacquiao would do against the same guy that destroyed Khan in four rounds last July. Garcia mopped the deck with Khan, knocking him down with a big left hook to the neck in the 3rd, and then putting him down two more times in the 4th to get the stoppage win.

I think Garcia might some rounds against Pacquiao, however, because if the light hitting Tim Bradley was able to win rounds against Pacquiao then surely the harder punching Garcia would win rounds as well. If Pacquiao couldn’t fight the full three minutes of every round the fight could end up being close. I still think Pacquiao would win, and he might prove a point that he’s got fairly good defensive skills in the process.

Khan is shopping around for a new trainer that can both teach him some defense and also spend more time with him. That was one of Khan’s gripes about Roach was that he couldn’t get the time he wanted with him.

Khan is going to be giving up a lot by leaving Roach, because by training at the highly popular Wildcard gym in Los Angles, Khan had access to the best sparring partners. I don’t know if he’ll be able to get the same thing by getting another trainer.
