Image: Roach: Chavez Jr. works out when he wants toBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach shockingly revealed that his fighter WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s) sets his own agenda when he wants to work out with him instead of there being a set schedule as the 26-year-old Chavez Jr gets ready for his September 15th fight against Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach said on Chavez Jr-Martinez 24/7 on HBO, “He [Chavez Jr] works out when he wants to. I’ve got calls at 2 o’clock in the morning to come into the gym. It bugs me a little bit, but overall it’s okay as long as we get the work done I’m happy. He’s definitely got an instinct as a fighter. He’s not a natural like his father [Julio Cesar Chavez Sr]. He has to work at it a little bit harder.”

In judging by the look on Roach’s face when he said this it looks like he’s more than a little bugged by Chavez Jr’s training habits. But he’s not going to make any noise about it because Chavez Jr, thus far, is still finding success despite his odd work habits. However, a lot of that success could be coming from his huge weight advantage each time he fights. If you’re coming into your fights weighing 20 pounds over the original weight for the division, you’re going to have an advantage over most guys.

At the same time, Chavez Jr. really hasn’t fought anyone all that good. To be sure, he’s beaten Andy Lee, Peter Manfredo Jr., John Duddy, Sebastian Zbik and Marco Antonio Rubio, but he’s never faced anyone like Sergio Martinez or Gennady Golovkin, two two fighters that could be the top two fighters in the middleweight division at this point. We’ll have to see whether Chavez Jr, with his odd work habits, will have the stamina to deal with the movement and quick strafing attacks from Martinez for 12 rounds.
