Image: Maidana vs. Soto-Karass tonightBy Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions has put #6 WBA welterweight contender Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28 KO’s) in a situation where he can succeed tonight agaisnt B level fighter Jesus Soto-Karass (26-7-3, 17 KO’s) in their 12 round bout for the vacant WBA Inter-Continental welterweight title.

If Maidana, 29, can’t succeed against Soto-Karass then Golden Boy is going to need to convince Maidana to move back down in weight to the light welterweight division where has a better chance of winning against good competition.

The Maidana-Soto Karass fight will be taking place on the undercard of the match-up between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez and Josesito Lopez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada in a Showtime televised bout. There’s been a lot of controversy about whether the fight card is sold out or not. Golden Boy reported that it’s sold out, but tickets are still available through Ticketmaster, so perhaps Golden Boy has a different set of guidelines that they’re running by for judging whether a fight card is a sellout or not.

Maidana has to look better in this fight than he did in losing a lopsided 10 round decision to Devon Alexander last February. Maidana just looked like a flabby light welterweight that had put on 7 pounds of fat when he tried taking on Alexander and it was a really poor performance from Maidana. He said he would move back down in weight to 140, where he held the WBA title, but then he changed his mind for some reason. As such, he’s put himself in a situation where he might have to reconsider that if things don’t work out tonight against Soto-Karass.

Soto-Karrass is like a bigger version of Maidana with slightly less power but a lot more losses on his record. I expect Maidana to eventually have as many losses as Soto-Karass in the very near future if he sticks it out at welterweight for long.
